Since 2013, Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle (LBS) has provided a world class educational experience for youth and young adults at our summer debate camp - the Eddie Conway Liberation Institute (ECLI). We have had over 100 students from around the country experience tremendous competitive success and personal growth. Our alumni have achieved the highest levels of success in debate through their wins in prestigious tournaments and national rankings.
We’ve had the privilege of being hosted by three college campuses, including two of Maryland’s historically Black colleges - Coppin State and Morgan State. Our program has been supported by some of the most phenomenal debate programs, debate leagues, college administrators, coaches, educators and competitors in the United States. Our goal for ECLI has always been to enhance the lives of youth to positively impact their communities. Debate has been our vehicle to do that.
We pride ourselves on having a completely independent debate institute for our students. This allows us the freedom and flexibility to provide some of the best instruction available for debate.
This also causes challenges for programs like ours, especially when it is not housed or financially supported by any mainstream institution. So for ECLI 2017, we’ve decided to do something different.
In the face of rising lodging costs and fees at universities, we’ve decided to to make this year’s camp a 2-week, local institute. Instead of housing students on a university campus, we will be training students in debate, advocacy and activism in Baltimore.
This year’s program will be available to any high school student, free of charge, July 17th to July 28th. We believe that this will be the most fiscally sound for our organization and still provides the best educational opportunities for high school students.
We aspire to create a long-term financial foundation for ECLI in the future and for it to be sustainable by 2018. We know that this will disappoint some of our most ardent supporters in the debate community, but we want to create a financially viable future for all of our youth development programming. We fully intend on ensuring that ECLI maintains it status as a world class educational program.
Details will be forthcoming about ECLI 2017. Thank you so much for your continued community support of LBS!
