More than a "debate camp"...
There are camp-wide lectures that explore a series of topics and ideas that will help you learn more about how to win debates. Our instructors are experts in a wide variety of academic areas including sociology, psychology, Africana Studies, Quare Studies, communications and more.
You will be put into labs with some of the most successful debaters and coaches in the United States. They will train you into becoming fiercely knowledgable and competitive for the upcoming debate season.
The lab leaders are well rounded in their debate experiences and can help you mold and shape any arguments you want to run.
We want you to have a great experience in Baltimore. We take all of our ECLI scholars on a series of weekend field trips around the city that are engaging and fun!
In 2013, we went to Artscape, which is America's largest free arts festival. We also explored the National Great Blacks in Wax Museum, the only wax museum in the world dedicated to Black people.
ECLI is strongly committed to the local Baltimore community. Throughout camp, we will take you to visit and interact with the people and institutions of Baltimore.
In 2013, we visted a Baptist church, Muslim mosque, locally owned Black restauraunts and attended a locally sponsored youth conference. These are valuable opportunities to develop an appreciation of the Baltimore community.
Cultural Identity Development
"A people's relationship to their heritage is the same as the relationship of a child to its mother."
Dr. John Henrick Clarke
ECLI is centered on the fundamental ideas of self-awareness and self love. Throughout ECLI, you will be pushed to learn more about yourself and your heritage. We believe that this make our scholars well-rounded people and ultimately better debaters.
Advocacy and Activism
Besides learning just about debate, we wil train you how to be an advocate for your community when you return home.
At ECLI, we see debate as deeply connected real world politics. After you complete ECLI, you will be able to use debate as a tool to empower yourself and the people around you!
